Developers of the year 2003, Bioware, return just months after the acclaimed Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2 to bring you another massive and thoroughly enjoyable RPG Jade Empire takes you back to mythical China (that’s before communism…) to a beautiful world of famed warriors and magical creatures by using some detailed and exceptional graphics. Gamers take control of one of the six customisable characters, and immediately take off training under they’re master, Sun Li. Disliked by many other students due to your masters favouritism, conflicts already begin and are pushed further as the game develops and many other secrets are revealed. Within the blink of an eye you are using your fighting techniques against many human and supernatural foes throughout the lush, inviting and sometimes terrifying regions and places ranging from quiet, cosy towns to dense, busy cities to lands plagued by the spirits of the dead. From the first moment you see Jade Empire the graphics will stand out above everything else. Well-designed areas, buildings and scenery are brought to life with bright and colourful graphics giving gamers a sense of reality (“Mom, I’m going to China, see you later…”). Ever told to leave your house and take up a sport or hobby, maybe even a martial art? No need when you can learn over 30 different ancient Chinese fighting styles ranging from Spirit Force, or heavenly strike all the way to morphing into 12ft tall dragons or poisonous toads (Which would be handy in school no doubt, eh kids?) and all from the comfort of your living room. With impressive graphics, I bet you are wondering about loading times? Sadly you’d be right to be pessimistic; loading does take some time but who cares when it contains game artwork and hints or pieces of history of the town you are entering. Cut-Scenes are extremely impressive and provide great interpretation of the games’ climaxes with exciting music and action footage that will get your heart going. Best yet Jade Empire much like the Kotor series has excellent sound quality. Every character, whom the player can actually hold a conversation with in Jade Empire, is voiced professionally and again give the player a great sense of involvement. Each follower (12 in total, 4 of which been hidden) have different and intriguing pasts and motives making Jade Empire better than real life; after all who needs friends when you can gain better more interesting friends from the switch of a button…. ehh… err… right, yes, I’m beginning to see why other people tend to look at us RPG heads a little strainge… Not only is Jade Empire easy to look at and listen too, it’s very easy to negotiate with basic controls and nothing overly complicated, players should pick this up in 5 minutes flat with no problems what so ever (‘Please connect controller’, nothing’s happening… he lied!). Jade Empire’s real time gaming allows gamers to take much more out of this RPG and it will give a good variety to the diet of heavy RPG fans. Jade Empire Still manages to keep a magic system in which most real time RPGs don’t and so stops the game from becoming another hack ‘n’ slash title like many others. Interfaces are easy to navigate and are almost exactly like Bioware’s other titles. The stats system is another fresh breath of air as depending on how you build your character; his charm, intuition, and intimidation will all differ and can’t be controlled by levelling up. Jade Empire allows you to chose between good and bad as is the new trend with all new RPGs and is still good fun. Fans of RPGs will be dying (or killing) to get their hands on this exciting, involving and exceptional game, that may take your ability to speak or interact with other human beings away from you. Make sure you have plenty in your fridge before attempting to discover the wonders, highlights and the brilliance of Jade Empire.
