Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Ep. 1

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Ep. 1

Platform: Nintendo Wii
Category: Platformer

Sonic is back and better than ever in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 for PSN, XBLA, WiiWare, and iPhone. Sega has returned Sonic to his roots in this 2D adventure continuing the original Genesis series. Sonic 4 follows the same style as Sonic 1, 2, and 3 but incorporates a bit of Sonic's new moves and is rendered in beautiful 3D.

Sonic 4 looks very similar to the early Sonic the Hedgehog games. The game is a side-scrolling platformer that plays in 2D. However, the graphics are modeled in 3D. Ring count, score, and time are displayed in the upper-left, and lives are displayed in the lower-left. The game feels very fluid and controls well even when running fast. Sonic still has his homing attack; I know a lot of gamers are skeptical of Sonic's newer features being included, but this doesn't get in the way, and it isn't abused. Helping Sonic keep his speed, the homing attack can be used to launch Sonic at enemies or at zip-lines.

Because Sonic 4 feels so much like the original Genesis Sonic games, players who have fond memories of those games will be very pleased with Sonic 4. Televisions containing power-ups are strewn across the levels just like you'd expect. Many classic badniks are back, and the first boss was once again Dr. Eggman in his hovercraft. He even uses a ball hanging on a chain! I'm a big Sonic fan and was very impressed with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1. I love the retro feel and incorporation of classic enemies and features, although I do hope (and assume) that there will be original designs in the game as well. The game will be released in fall of this year, and I can't wait!
