Hudson's Bonk: Brink of Extinction

Hudson's Bonk: Brink of Extinction

Platform: Nintendo Wii
Category: Action Games, Platformer

Hudson had a great showing so far. I had the privilege to get some hands-on time with four of their new games. The first was Bonk: Brink of Extinction. For those who don't know, the original Bonk was a game for the TurboGrafx-16. It was a side-scrolling platformer starring a caveman named Bonk. Thankfully, it still is a 2D platformer, though now it's been updated with 3D models!

Bonk: Brink of Extinction is a fun and great looking refresh for the series. Bonk had three transformations that I saw – normal, ice, and fire. Each one makes his attacks different. I don't know if more are available later in the game. The ice transformation gives Bonk an attack that freezes enemies in a block of ice. The blocks can then be pushed around and used as platforms, which help you to get to platforms that would otherwise be unreachable. It also features co-op play, although I wasn't able to see that in action.

The game was bright, colorful, and fun. I think fans of platformer titles will definitely want to play Bonk: Brink of Extinction. It will be released in late summer or early fall of this year on XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare.
